INDEPENDENT PROJECT – PROPOSAL

Independent Project Intentions

Which of the words given in the brief document have you selected, and why?

Division is more of a personal matter for me and the most interesting term out of them all. Division can be captured in many different ways, however I want to focus more on every day objects that represent personal issues, that is a subject of separation and disagreements.  It is probably one of the most conversational topic out of them all as everybody is divided in opinions because of gender, disability, religion and appearance. I want to inspire the audience to show the difference in the way people live their lives and it is acceptable.

What do you want to point your camera at?

I am wanting to point my camera at different objects to represent division. I want to use my home town as inspiration towards my photographs. Using my imagination, I want to capture something original and simple to catch the audience’s attention. With further research, I want to use everyday objects that will engage in the audience such as reading glasses and a hearing aid. These are everyday essentials for some people. I want to make the audience realise a lot more that everyone is divided in the way they can get supported for disabilities or situations they cannot avoid. I also want to use chairs, to represent height difference.

“Sharp clearly defined contrasts of light and shade produced by strong sidelighting can convey the powerful angles of geometric objects.”

(Hedgecoe, 1998, 56).
This is what I am going to try capture in my final images to use light to produce shadows by using simple but effective angles.

Why are you interested in this subject?

I am interested in using the term division for my final project because it is an on-going issue around today’s culture. It is a well-known public issue which I find interesting as everybody is divided in opinions and separated in representation of themselves. It is highly known across television, online and word of mouth. The media industry has had a big influence in division. Attitude towards male and females are often labelled and have to act a certain way. However, some people are divided in opinion, thinking it is right or wrong.

This image has made me interested in the term because it has played with the light, which I want to achieve in my final project. It is a unique and simple idea.

What do you hope an audience will take from your images?

I hope the audience will take the time to observe the images and reflect that everybody is different in the own way and it is acceptable in today’s society. I also wish the audience to get inspired into thinking why the world is so divided and think it is acceptable to have different opinions.

What areas of research are you considering to help deepen your understanding of the subject you have chosen?

I will be using the internet to conduct my own research into photographs that represent division using objects, people, portraits and animals. Also, I will be using primary research by talking to my tutors and peers. I will also look photographers such as Richard Prince who uses other people’s photographs to reproduce them and Charlie Waite, a landscape photographer.

What practitioner(s) or visual resources would you consider to have influenced you? This not have to be photographic.

The 7 days of Garbage by Gregg Segal has influenced my ideas as it shows the representation of the family of how much waste they use as it can build character showing what they like. It also shows characteristics. In addition, Created Equal by Mark Laita is another influence. This photograph shows different cultures found in America, showing a way how people choose to express themselves.

What support or equipment might you need to achieve your goals?

I will be using my tutor’s guidance and my own knowledge from what I’ve learnt over the semester. I will be using a Canon 700D and a tripod. After producing my photographs, I will be using my computer at home to edit the images before publishing the final images on my blog.
