Images in the wild

Process

For this project, we was given the task to do appropriation photography. Before I started this task, I researched into different photographers to get me inspired, as I have never done Photography before. I wanted to get some ideas and I learnt from my workshop tutor about cropping and adding effects. I used my mobile phone to take the photo then used tools to crop into the face. I then uploaded it to Instagram.

Artist Research

Richard Prince – He is an american photographer who takes other artists work to reproduce them as his own. He began doing this in the year 1975. He was born in 1949 and lives in Upstate New York.

Prince’s work is very inspiring and simple. I like how others people’s work has been given a new piece of life by Richard putting together Instagram posts.

I took this photo out of a magazine. I used the term ‘appropriation’ to crop into a young girl screaming. It is an advertisement for parents to help deal with younger children’s anger. I’ve cropped it so you see only the child’s face. The scenery is out of focus, creating an unknown story. This defeats the image itself as without seeing the full image, you would not guess it is an advertisement for parents. This can show a different story such as photographer artist Jill Greenberg. She created a controversial series giving lollipops to toddlers and then taking them away. This then will show emotions, giving realism in her photographs. With the image I took from the magazine, this concept can work with this image if I didn’t know it was an advertisement.

 Somebody else’s work

This image was taken from Instagram using the hashtag provided.  I cropped the original image. Gamers will automatically know where the characters are from as the character colour clothing and weapons are well known in the gaming community. I chosen this image as it captured my eye with the use of colours and the detail of the characteristics.
